| After I first ordered my Kindle DX I was so worried that it was going to be heavy, bulky, and just too big. I saw the pictures that they had for it but it still didn't reassure me. Well I opened up the box and picked up my new Kindle and I was amazed that it was so light. Now from other reviews that I read it seems it is nowhere near as light as the other Kindle ( which is true my aunt has one) but it's not going to break your arm off. I enjoy everything about my Kindle DX. It is so easy to use! You can access and download stuff through Amazon or just do it through your actual Kindle. I have to admit that I didn't really read the directions, but if you are never not sure of something... Like I wasn't sure of My Collections and what that was. So I just looked it up in the Kindle DX User's Guide because you can search things out in a specific book your reading or through the whole Kindle!
I honestly have to say that this is a great device. I've had my Kindle DX for a week now and I'm proud to say that the battery is still holding strong(this is with the wireless off)! It is not even down to 50% yet. I love the longevity of the battery. But one important thing that you must do when ordering your kindle is have a cover or case for it. I have nothing to hold my kindle in as of yet, but I am reading reviews and hoping to order one soon! Enjoy! |
| Seeing the release of the new Kindle WiFi models sparked me to write the review. I've had my Kindle DX Graphite since mid-July, and have used it extensively. While overall I really like it, here is a short list of pros and cons:
PROS: - Excellent, large screen - speed (for E-Ink device) - Collections for books, so you can organize them however you want - good, solid feel - good battery life CONS: - Prev/Next Page buttons only on right side (I guess Amazon doesn't like left-handed people...) - 4Gb of space, same as smaller Kindle, even though a lot of people will use it for large PDFs (although to be honest, I've loaded 100s of documents and have plenty of space left so far) - PRICE The last point is primarily why I gave it 4 stars - now with a $190 Kindle out with same screen, and with extra features like WiFi and new controller, why is DXG $380? Double the price?? |
| I have a Kindle 2 and (graphite) DX, and have ordered a Kindle 3 (though obviously haven't seen it in person).
Some reviews here are suggesting that, if you were thinking of ordering a DX now, you should wait until the Kindle 3 starts shipping in late August before deciding. I suggest otherwise. People who need the larger display of the DX, and can afford it, should probably go ahead and order it, despite the new Kindle 3 coming out next month. The current generation DX (graphite) just started shipping a few weeks ago and is not likely to be updated again during 2010, and perhaps not until summer 2011. The DX that is shipping now has two of the best features that the just-announced Kindle 3 will have: 50% greater screen contrast, making it easier to read in dim lighting, and better handling of PDF files. The upcoming Kindle 3 has other features that the current DX does not have. Of these, the only one that really matters to me is the ability to select between two or three different fonts, instead of just one. Others include: 20% faster page turns (though the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX are already pretty fast in my view), a 5-way navigation rocker that replaces the little joystick, quieter buttons (as not to wake a sleeping spouse), wi-fi, and reduced size and weight relative to the Kindle 2. When the DX is eventually updated, it's a safe bet that it will have most of these added features, will be a bit smaller than the current DX (while keeping the same display size), and will probably a few other features that next month's Kindle 3 doesn't yet have (but that Kindle 4 will get). The current version of the DX itself is quite new - it just began shipping a few weeks ago. For Amazon to come out with an even newer DX that incorporates all the features of the new Kindle 3, they would have to retool their factories, make new molds for the new casing, etc etc. And all of the partners who manufacture accessories, such as cases, would also have to retool to produce new accessories that would fit the new DX model. This is a lot of work and expense. Plus, each time a new model comes out, everyone who bought the old one and is still within the 30-day return period will return it to get the new one, and Amazon takes a loss on these returns - another cost of coming out with new models. Therefore, we can expect new models probably no more often than once every 6-12 months. Since the DX is not the huge seller that the 6" Kindle is, we should expect the DX will be updated less frequently than the 6" Kindle. So, what to buy today? I think most people can safely choose between the current (graphite) DX and the new Kindle 3 on the basis of whether they need a 10" display or a 6" display. It's hard for me to imagine that someone who would choose a DX over a Kindle 2 would choose a Kindle 3 over a DX. To someone who buys a Kindle DX now, it is surely frustrating to know that the $139 kindle shipping next month will have some features that your DX doesn't have. But these features won't matter much to your everyday experience of using and enjoying the DX. For example, the DX's joystick does everything that the Kindle 3's new 5-way rocker button will do. Wi-fi would be nice, but honestly there aren't too many places left on the planet that have wi-fi but no 3G coverage. So if you need a 10" screen and can afford a DX, go ahead and order it now and enjoy it. It's a really great device, well-designed, has snappy performance and is a joy to use. |
| Awesome device. Amazing piece of technology. I really am enjoying it more than I thought I would have. It is way more convenient than keeping a book on the nightstand and having to keep a bookmark. The amount of storage is incredible and downloads are amazingly fast. I can highly recommend the Kindle DX to anyone who reads alot and doesnt want to be overcome with complicated device and download instructions. |
| I have two Kindles. One is first generation (and I still love it) and the other is the Kindle DX (which I love even more). But I am writing this review in light of the fact that the newer Kindles will soon be here and anyone contemplating a Kindle DX should not buy one until you read about the upcoming features on the newer and FAR CHEAPER models of the Kindle. There will two of them.
Otherwise, you might feel like me and think...Ouch!...because shortly after I bought the "new" Kindle in 2010, the release of an even newer set of Kindles was announced (in Aug 2010), one for $139 and one for $189. I've compared the features and I am truly wondering if I should have waited. These Kindles are being released so fast and furiously that it is hard to know how soon the "newest" Kindle will be replaced by a newer version! I know that the Kindle DX has holds far more books and has longer battery life than the first generation Kindle. But what about the newer versions? Will they do just as well and cost far less than I paid for my Kindle DX? They will definitely be lighter to carry! The DX weighs far more. For those of you contemplating a Kindle DX, I would strongly suggest waiting to see how the newest Kindles do. It is impossible to review them, including possible glitches, until they ship on August 27. But since it is late July as I write this, I have to ask why anyone would want to pay $379 for the current Kindle (which shows as being "in stock" ) when the newer ones will be released in about a month. If you still are interested in the DX, it does upload books quickly, has nearly a 10 inch reading display, up to 3G in storage, etc. I'd be happy to answer any more questions for those who want to leave any in the comments section but since this review is coming so close to the release of the newer Kindles, I think it would be worthwhile to look at both the Kindle DX page and the upcoming Kindle model (Aug 27) and compare features. I'd love to know what others think. |
